The Darren Smith Classic
The legend of Darren Smith lives on each year through the clubs annual open event, the Darren Smith Cycling Classic. Darren was an outstanding young rider who had the cycling world at his feet having featured in numerous European championship events and represented Australia at the Barcelona Olympics. Tragically, Darren was killed when struck by a vehicle whilst training in November 1992 at the age of 20. So that the memory of Darren would live on, the Gold Coast Cycling Club initiated the annual cycling event in his name to be held in November around the anniversary of his death. The first event was held in 1994 and was won by Henk Vogels. Darren’s best mate, Robbie McEwen, has won the event more than any other rider taking out his third victory in the 2011 event.
