Compact Cranks are cranks that have a smaller inner spider (where the chain rings bolt onto the crank) than standard cranks. The reason for this is to allow for a smaller sized chain ring than the standard 53/39 found on most racing bikes. The use of a 50/34 combination provides a lower gearing ratio allowing people to comfortably ride up hills (if there is such a thing). Compact Cranks have started to gain in popularity over the other option which was a Triple Chain Ring crank set due to the lesser weight.
